Play from 7:40[7:40] ..." Doctor David -- for the Boston university school public health. Thanks very much doctor."...

Play from 0:00[0:00]" The swine flu everybody's talking about it but it doesn't seem as though many people were able to get swine flu shots or nasal inhalers. There have been a number of doses delivered to the state the state says. About a million but it's hard to find anybody who's actually had more than administered. And that is causing some people would be very concerned as we get into the Thanksgiving holiday joining us from the view school of public health doctor David -- off. Just how serious is the swine -- doctor."

Play from 0:27[0:27]" Well swine flu influenza and influenza as always is serious disease. A most of it you know it's like an auto accident meant a lot of auto accidents -- just fender benders but some of them are quite serious and the more that there is -- more serious. The big cases that we have. So -- this pierce swine flu is actually. Not very different than seasonal flu except for two things. One of them is that affecting people were much younger than ordinarily. And that's because that's typical pandemic flu. And the other is that there's lots more -- around this is a really bad flu season and it's -- much much earlier than we usually experience."

Play from 1:04[1:04]" We've certainly heard some shocking stories about the number of children who have died is not alarming."

Play from 1:09[1:09]" Well it of course it's alarming although in -- relative numbers it's actually not such a large number. There there are millions of children every year who die of pneumonia around the world. That's very uncommon in the United States and so what we doubled the number of pediatric -- say from eighty to a 160. That's quite shocking and of course for each. Particular case it's a it's a tragedy. But the actual numbers are not huge numbers but they are very worrisome and if this is typical pandemic flu they tend to strike younger populations."

Play from 1:45[1:45]" We know doctor that the production of the swine flu vaccine has been slow because of the incubation process that it's as follows a symbol scientific model of growing via the virus in -- it takes longer and has with some other forms of flu vaccine. The companies that produce this stuff for all overseas companies there is one American factory of its -- by. A French pharmaceutical company and have to wonder about priorities the federal government has paid for all these dosages but if you look to find a clinic with a sub is being administered as I just did. Putting in -- zip code here 02134. I found that there's nothing in the immediate vicinity and that includes the city of Boston as far as public clinics -- There was 124 of November in Framingham town residents only and seasonal and -- Vaccine only and there's one December 8 in law was listed on this public health. Web site and that only has the seasonal flu where all the shots gone."

Play from 2:39[2:39]" Well bill being produced and they're produced by the day there there are more available by the date. When this point who first raised its -- six months ago last April. I think most of us who -- predict anything about Louis always has been hesitant because at the very unpredictable disease but. At the time. We thought that we would have this kind of -- season that's the first thing in the second that would take off 46 months to produce. That the very first doses of vaccine and it turns out that although it's difficult to predict -- both of those predictions have come true. It's actually fairly remarkable that we both produced seasonal influenza vaccine and this New Mexico over the -- produced by the same process. In such a short amount of time. We knew that it was going to be a race between the virus and the vaccine and so far the virus has been a little bit ahead of us. Not by very much but by a couple of weeks but both coupled with the Portsmouth a lot of different."

Play from 3:36[3:36]" What about the distribution of the vaccine are you satisfied as a as a public health -- that is being done correctly order our doctors charging an administrative fee. To give you a shot of a vaccine that they get for free."

Play from 3:48[3:48]" Well. Added I don't have any figures and that exactly the government decided to provide the vaccine directly to providers. And that's unusual that that's not the way it's usually done. On and on whether that. Will have been. In hindsight the best way to do it we're not gonna know there's a lot of things about what's happening this flu season that we're really not gonna know for another year -- and only by looking back on its. When you're in the middle of that it's very difficult. To try and make sense of that. I know a lot of people are working very very hard. And very long hours to try to get this done. But it's a moving target and it's an extraordinarily difficult thing for everybody to cope with."

Play from 4:31[4:31]" One newspaper describes it is the state having the flu crisis the output and break being worse. An earlier than expected is that accurate."

Play from 4:39[4:39]" It's not it's not accurate to say than expected because I think. Last spring we knew that something like this was gonna happen there at least we we thought something like that was when the -- was going to be happen. But it's very unusual to have this much flu this early in the season ordinarily -- Summer on January or February and already we are at levels that we ordinarily see well only by the end of the flu season. So on it is you know quite an unusual flu season comparing it to last. For five years of only one of which was a bad flu season. Or we have had extraordinarily bad -- and we've had pandemic in the past I've looked through two flu pandemic and 19681957. And -- it's not clear that this is worse than either of those we won't know until it was total."

Play from 5:28[5:28]" Massachusetts is predicting that the state will have received about one and a half million doses by the end of this -- they've identified in the high risk category which includes pregnant women. Children under the age of eighteen people who take care of infants. And people and other risky as well as health care providers who have direct contact. With the Irish people about one point six million people in most categories salute the number of doses the state gets by the end of the month which is nearby. Should be pretty good but for the rest of us they're not expecting a real surge until perhaps. The end of January if it's that laid do we still have to get the shoppers who were taken that Porter will all be over by then."

Play from 6:06[6:06]" Well again. Nobody really knows who is unpredictable. But I'm in America the very end of the line amendment over 65 group and I will make sure to get it as soon as it's available -- remain in effect January targeted in January. This flute is is not going to go away. Com. You know from from the influence the world. It's probably gonna come back next year as you know in the form of -- more seasonal influenza and so we're going to be getting. The backseat of this type of -- Probably for drugs for some years except hopefully. When it's not pandemic any longer at war -- little settled out of the lower level but it is now right now most of the population doesn't have any. Immunity to it that's quite striking younger people it's only -- older folks who had seen to have some immunity from many years back."

Play from 6:56[6:56]" The final question doctor -- offer the the affair -- listening right now the mother father who have small children. Who have pediatricians. And and have access to them but don't have shots at. You just keep calling -- say please let me know when you get is likely to get my child immunized."

Play from 7:13[7:13]" Yes you do and there are I've heard stories of pediatricians say well this is sort of knew it you know it's a a vaccine that hasn't been tested. Don't listen to anybody told you that this vaccine is an extremely well past that it made by a process that. We've been using for years hundreds of millions of doses of open. Given with very good safety record. And so. Yes keep pestering your pediatrician for."

Play from 7:40[7:40]" Doctor David -- for the Boston university school public health. Thanks very much doctor."
