[0:00]" We're talking with my allotment he has put together this incredible picture book Harvard Square and illustrated history since 1950 -- a picture is the stories and certainly some insightful inscriptions from noted people from Harvard Square and beyond. Are all in this -- talk about why you did it and what kind of a labor of love it must've --"
[0:22]" Well I had spent a lot of time and -- square over the years and I thought it was a great place it was full of energy and life mentality and -- Thought it was a special place and it. I think like any other Clinton had been -- so I really was curious about how it could become that way and what it used to be lake and aren't even what it was like when I first came as opposed to now and so I've started to do some research and poke around."
[0:45]" Well the pictures are incredible day tells the story. Talk about some of the many stories I've just marked a few in here because it's just goes on and on I mean some of the best stories ever. Let's talk about the visit by John Wayne in 1974. And of that."
[1:02]" the great story. I guess he was in town promoting a movie. On called the Q. Which obviously has been lost to the deaths of time but he got into a Hank. And actually rode down Mass Avenue and a tank and people were helping in the notebook."
[1:20]" Can you imagine this is -- duke after -- exactly -- well he was called on I -- for being somewhat of a fraud."
[1:28]" prepared yet to prove his muster."
[1:29]" Exactly it was the Harvard lampoon which had -- some of the festivities as you can imagine."
[1:35]" Moving on to rattle street where I spent a lot of time of course we of the American repertory theater over the air in the nice shops nice restaurants -- neck of the woods of of Harvard Square. Always a big attraction."
[1:47]" The -- Austria I mean to -- got the -- theatre which is what what jam that places and has been instrumental and summoned the you know foreign repertory films that have come to America. You know -- Harvey one of the founders. And bright holiday the other candidate they started Janice films which brought over. Some of the the great films that we think of the great -- knees and and Tony unease and and Berkman films that hadn't been seen in the United States prior."
[2:21]" Well you mentioned theater of course we know about it street performer is. Can't think of Harvard Square without thinking of restaurants and one of the classics of course the worst house which is gone -- for what thirteen years."
[2:34]" Yes that's right it it's closed in 1996 and that was almost in the -- run for the worst house which is pretty credible when he think about it for restaurant. We have what a quirky place you know what went I had went I had been in the worst house minority looking a little down on the block but people used to. Look to meet there and discussed issues of the day there was a whole. -- clash east happened -- The mayor and some the other movers and shakers of Cambridge every morning -- president of Harvard. There's a Harvard economists -- to be there and -- to be pleased to look to meet there and and just chat."
[3:16]" Having said that in some of those names you just drop you think Harvard Square gets a bad rap as being a snooty place."
[3:23]" That's an interesting question I think Harvard gets a rapist being in place I think. This square however has always been much more democratic and I think that's one of the things people like about it it. Everyone kind of comes together there CI you do you have. The Harvard professors. That -- that will end up running the country. But you also have the homeless people and this street performers and people down on the elect and everyone in between."
[3:49]" Well you said it very well to wrap it up there at the end -- obviously tons more in Harvard Square and illustrated history since 1950 great gift for people who had to move away."
