Play from 0:00[0:00]" After the terrorists were finished with the world trade towers in New York City on this date eight years ago. A jet headed for Washington and ended up crashing into the Pentagon with a loss of life. And that the Pentagon BBC's Steven Portnoy Stephen what is planned for the Defense Department headquarters."

Play from 0:18[0:18]" Well it'd be a very low key ceremony here this is very much in every way a working day here at the Pentagon as I wrote in. On the subway about a 150 other people got off they in the predawn hours in March right into their offices here this is the world's largest office building. Outside they'll be a solemn memorial. -- ceremony. About 300 family members of the 184. People who lost their lives here eight years ago. The president will speak he will be joined by his Defense Secretary Robert Gates and the chairman of the joint chiefs admiral Mike Mullen. They -- all have remarks the president will lay a wreath at what is called the zero line. Of the Pentagon memorial that is the entrance to the memorial where there is a darkened piece of limestone that was recovered from the remains of the Pentagon. Eight years ago it -- September 11 2001. 9:37. AM that was the moment when American Airlines flight 77 crashed into -- one of this -- The the devastation that day it was significant. Even though the Pentagon is as you say huge building and is. Will build. It was hit by plane that was fully jet fuel. Absolutely. They they chase -- like a half million square feet of office space was lost instantly. You'll remember that a lot of the area where. The impact had occurred was actually under renovation at that time and and it almost recently just just about had been completed. That work there. It would use the very rapid recovery a rapid excavation of the site they've they've basically rebuilt it in and just about a year. And it took -- a lot longer though for the memorial to be built outside but it was a year ago. That then President Bush was joined by members of congress even members of the Supreme Court. To dedicate the memorial that is outside the building -- 184 metal benches that come out of the ground -- almost looking like queens. I each one group memorialized is the victim. And they are spaced out in the memorial and based on the ages of the victims the first is for three year old girl. And the one all the way in the back it's for 71 year old man ended the child was what is the daycare center and pentagon. I know it was three year old girl who was on on the flight on flight seventy cents. OK and -- flight 77 was as far as we know with the hijackers intended to crash that into the Pentagon and they now believe so I was certainly yes it was flight 77 was on its way from Dulles to I believe Los Angeles. At Dulles airport is not far outside the Washington area of course it's about a 45 minute drive outside the city. We are directly across the it Potomac River from Washington DC. And that the flight path of flight 77 showed that basically the hijackers took control of the flight. Not soon after not long after takeoff. And net and steered directly into which one. It was a direct hit."

Play from 3:19[3:19]" And flight 93 the jet that crashed in Pennsylvania was headed back toward Washington before. It went down after the struggle in the cockpit that was monitored by the passengers in the back of the plane and the famous cried arms let's roll. We know that that plane was headed toward Washington Steven has it ever been discerned. Whether it was its target was the capital for the White House or somewhere else and in Washington DC."

Play from 3:44[3:44]" Either to the best of my knowledge I believe in 9/11 commission had the belief and I know that belief is widely held here in Washington that building was that plane was headed. What the -- ABC Stephen Portnoy had a target that was hit with. Terrible results the Pentagon on this -- eight. Years after violent -- thank you thank you."
