Play from 0:00[0:00]" It's not about the big night at the Oscars is ABC's entertainment critic. David -- Steve good morning to you David you exhausted you have a little tired having gone to sleep yet. That you've been up all Nightline OK let's talk about the ceremony obviously the Oscars putting the billionaire in salon dot."

Play from 0:17[0:17]" They really did and I'm happy they did this is a movie that when -- first side. Back I fit in October I knew right away that this was an Oscar worthy movie. I didn't know for sure that it would win -- I think I think I started saying in early November really before it came out and I thought this one had a really good shot. And I'm glad the academy recognized it and envoy to -- recognize it was nominated for ten awards and at 18 including best picture. And the funny thing about that is this is there a best picture winner. And there are no actors in it that any of us here have our effort or that we have known you know that there might have been mortar to. That looks familiar from may be one -- two movies that they've appeared in here in the United States but you really couldn't name an actor in this movie. And here it is it is the best pitcher in and has won the actors been nominated for one of the acting categories may be would've gotten more who knows but that's a tall order to fill because the competition was pretty stiff and acting categories Sean -- his second Oscar for playing Harvey milk. The detainees gay activist and -- he also he made a plea. For gay rights when it when he was on stage an immunity Winsley chief finally won. Her Oscar which she wanted so badly to -- he was all for five and she was going up against Merrill Streep. Who was on her fifteen nomination to him and who is considered really the standard bearer. Of acting for women. And -- they'll -- trees one for Vicky Cristina Barcelona and we knew -- it was a given that Heath Ledger was going to -- a posthumous Oscar only the second time that's ever happened. For his role as the joker in the and the dark night. Any big upsets no I don't I don't really think there were any big upsets at all I think it was. Fairly predictable -- you know. We weren't exactly sure who was going to win best supporting actress and it really kind of was a toss up between John and and Mickey Rourke. I kind of thought before I came out here to cover the show. I thought Mickey Rourke was going to win but when I got out here everybody was telling me that John and is going to win and I'm talking not a couple of people who. Vote in the academy and a couple other people who were close to a lot of people who vote in the academy. So I started to change -- mine I was pulling for Mickey Rourke I think that would do very entertaining but let's touch on -- very entertaining when he won any really that's what it's all about these days. Whether or not you're entertaining when you win an Oscar. And was huge an entertaining as host Hugh Jackman was very entertaining when he was on -- that was the remarkable thing what are the things that they changed about the Oscars as they decided to name the host and barely put him on the show but when he was there. He was extremely. Affected me."

Play from 2:57[2:57]" Lot of people were. Concerned her I don't know of concern is the right word they just did believe that Hugh Jackman was capable of being a good host but. What I was saying what other people were saying is that did this guy's a triple threat -- saying he can dance and he is actually pretty funny as very good comedic timing. And he that was on display last night and he did a great job he he had audience with the opening number wit which was. A montage was a musical number and he sang about each movie he presented it as. They had not having enough because the tough economic times are going through they couldn't afford to do an opening number but he said I'm going to -- an opening number anyway. And they had scenery and props that look like they were made for a high school show. And it was just it was so well executed and then there was another great singing number in the middle -- sang with. Beyonce and Zack Ephron came out from High School Musical and it resisted. It was a very good show and when he wasn't funny and entertaining somebody else was funny and entertaining Judd Apatow now. Had at a little short. It in there also is well -- which was very good and and Stiller did send up of Joaquin Phoenix and the -- ethnic. Infamous performance on Letterman a couple weeks ago so I I thought overall that it was a very good chip. And I know the present as were kept secret and big surprises fare well there were a few big surprise is that what is interesting moments of the nineteen when Jennifer Aniston. Presented bad best animated film with Jack black and what happened there. Is that the director of the show chose to do to cutter ways to Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. There's plenty of subtext there everybody knows -- operate as a subtext there. And the -- even if it was amazing even in the press room there was a huge cast. Both times he did twice within like three or four minutes and I thought that was an interesting thing to do I don't know quite necessarily ignited I necessarily treat with that I think a lot of I think a lot of people probably. He probably sort of being enjoyed that I don't know if there was really necessary."

Play from 5:08[5:08]" Interesting last question you said the idea is to be entertaining obviously for an audience. Was the television audience watching this year because the ratings were dismal last year you well that's the thing it's it's really hard to know in and I was very critical of of their approach this year -- approach was to be. Secretive that's right they didn't they weren't telling people who was going to present also another -- interest in person. Who presented what was Robert patents and and he's the star of of the twilight movies now replaced the main vampire and you know me some people are like oh whatever I don't care about that movie -- and -- Robert patents -- is but there are millions of young girls -- know who he -- And that movies made a fortune. And they kept -- a secret that he was presenting and -- why would you want to do that if you trying to maximize publicity for your show. That's one of the things you don't keep a secret the only thing I can imagine. Is if this is this was their plan because this of what they're going to do for now lines -- next year they could say. Look who we have last year you're going to have to tune in this year to find out who we're going to have here. And they also did an interesting thing. -- each of the acting categories they had five past winners come out and make a presentation and they had one person designated to speak. T each nominee and I thought that was very at that that was very -- got mixed reviews in the press room I personally liked it ABC's David lost the thank you so much go get some sleep well not going to happen anytime soon."
