[0:00]" And joining us now is Jim Boyle president of the membership and advocacy group college parents of America. And we've been looking at what what appears to be. What will be the sharpest tuition increase in years for families nationwide starting next fall. Jim thanks for being here on WBZ. Okay so we know that the financial reality is pending. There's really not much we can do about it but these are really hard economic times for people. Any advice for parents."
[0:31]" Well something can be done between now and next all of that is its state legislatures put more money into higher educations and it won't be so much pressure to raise tuition. Part of the reason to wish -- continue to go up over the last two decades is that state legislatures in good times and bad have not supported higher education."
[0:50]" And it's interesting because according to these statistics it looks like. The state universities and colleges are the ones that are going to really see the biggest jump in their in their rates."
[1:01]" Well in and it's. Partly it's supply and demand issue which we all -- in economics 11 there's a relatively fixed supply of seats available at traditional four year public colleges and universities. And despite the high cost there's a tremendous demand for those seats. Because students and their families understand that a college education as essential to success in today's economy."
[1:23]" It's interesting that the private universities which of course always tend to be more expensive. Have less wiggle room to raise their prices so that's one bright spot here."
[1:31]" One bright spot and and also private universities of course have a range of actual prices that families pay. They have their sticker price but then there are always quick to point out that very few families actually paid sticker price. So where there is pressure however is in their financial aid budgets and they may make. More financial aid available. To a to a greater number of students but then the grant per student may go down."
[1:58]" You suggest that the timing really couldn't be worse why is that."
[2:01]" the timing couldn't be worse because of what's going on in the economy for four parents. That unemployment rate Beasley is growing. Home equity which used to be a place where parents that parents could happen to. To meet real time college cost is not available to the vast majority of families. And so unfortunately they're having to -- in either into their savings. Or even worse into their retirement. While it's frustrating to go on that debt to pay for college I would caution families. You can you can borrow money for college but no one has been -- money for your own retirement."
[2:37]" Okay so some other tips before we go here."
[2:40]" Well ask for financial -- don't be embarrassed about it two thirds of students do receive some form financially it's important if a lot of fast the free application for federal student assistance which is available online. Three -- the US department of education and every student should fill that out because you never know what aid might be available and it's essential form in order be eligible."
[3:03]" Is that really didn't go far enough though Jim."
[3:07]" Well everyone has an individual's situation. The for those students who were already in College Station -- and may not have been receiving some form of aid. They should approach their financial aid office because wants to schools made an investment in the student they want to graduate that's student and so while it may not have been available early in college. Dollars and become available but he got to ask for."
[3:33]" Jim -- with the college parents of America advocacy group thank you for your input we appreciate it."
