Play from 0:19[0:19]" Please note no one was hurt in the making of that last public service and asked if Mike and as evidence that long time but it's appropriate that we play the karate attachment. When we introduce. Our two next guests. Primary man here is since I met. Is to comb his visit yet it's too cold all right. And he's ahead instructor at the can show roof family temple which is located in -- bridge. -- on a student or use the driver and bodyguard who a little bit -- its. Drew for area is here his his student for many many years. And my preacher who fund their playing that particular public service announcement we had -- yeah. And actually. The the reason met his years because -- you were recommended to me by my good friend Gary Armstrong was a regular panel member and you're different. Annie said Jordan you've got to meet met because it's I mean obviously there are a lot of wonderful people who teach martial arts she said the he's doing something extremely. Special and it's it's affected our families that you -- a winner gets a lot of people in the community. Well welcome aboard well thank you very much let me ask you first of all what can show roof family Kendall means tempos are certain brand of martial art."

Play from 1:31[1:31]" It's a style and that actually can sure rue is temple short of current and -- means wing Japanese. And it's and basically -- there's about sixteen of us all throughout the area. I'm just the one aux bridge but it does quite a few months and its course a keyword -- family yes it is a picture view and your family old guard up and ready to go correctly we we we definitely like to involve. Our family but we also look to get everybody's family involved. This is something that you know you can share with -- child so. We really promote the fans excited which issue you're -- you're blushing -- is. -- I don't think you'll want to mess with her and -- defend myself -- she's a -- she's -- former -- she -- second -- and she actually -- the 1999 -- Fighting champion. And she actually went to Italy and represent USA. In 99 but the world Waco association so well here we are."

Play from 2:33[2:33]" And the reason I wanted to heavy here tonight particularly is because we're talking about what's back to school. And kids and and being. Well let's talk about positive role models for a second there are enough of them. You doing some stuff there beyond simply teaching the moves and the and the that the art of at all no matter what your philosophy first."

Play from 2:53[2:53]" What we have we have a lot of things that we do with a karate obviously everybody knows the called buzzwords -- of karate you know the character development. Trying to make sure that they they improve this school work all that stuff is is pretty. Pretty common to hear what the word karate or teach karate in some form but we go beyond that we we try to make sure that they they get to take this stuff and bring it. Outside even further. I want the programs we're running -- something new. It's called giving watery and what we do is we actually take -- student's tuition and we donated to a charity. We say can be any charity as long as it's you know not for profit and we just put their money out there and that we. Actually bring the student in front of the class we -- the certificate that says they donated intuition to this charity to try to force of the giving Spirit. So that when they're millionaires when they grow up in have high paying jobs and they're all happy that they feel compelled to give they get that feeling of charity which is still missing. It's our way of bringing the next generation to that side."

Play from 3:58[3:58]" You pretty inspiring in in the way you say that and do it and I want to just mention that Drew ferry is here. As students for several years right seven yen to seven years at the end of October and two obviously it's something that you love as as a as a passion doing what it is but bill what about -- philosophy and direction and how he runs the school what what dean inspired Cuba -- all what it --"

Play from 4:22[4:22]" Attracted me the most was you know I it started out with my brother in law who got introduced to it. In just the environment that Matt and Shannon ran in -- conquer originally and now an -- bridge it's just such a such a close knit environment. Everybody is it's one big Sam. And there's no boundaries between ages or -- anything like that. You start out as a white belt all you -- as you progress everybody just stays close it's a really really great environment."

Play from 4:52[4:52]" I know that and that you can come in this instance we're focusing on education a bit tonight and teaching should. Teaching is such -- but the particularly teaching the the martial arts are getting physical. You you're always gonna have people who are lagging behind because -- just we're not all the opposite."

Play from 5:07[5:07]" We you know that's what you do mention that it it karate is one of those things that really doesn't. I discriminate that would make it it's more about. Making yourself better self improvement. They're if somebody comes into my school adult child or otherwise and they can do five push -- what I tell on this. I wanted to do set. And it's taken to a 150 wanted to do to. So it's more about making sure that you improve more than your physical standards now karate is one of these. Great things I hate to keep saying of course I -- it teaches what are. It's just one of these things where you goalie -- level that your own peace and you improve yourself and ends up not being about muscle and ends up not being about even speak as more to be more to be a boat. Knowing what to do and how to do it."

Play from 5:55[5:55]" My my point to is it as a teacher yes. You -- I've been hearing about you from other students and so we're as a teacher you're the kind of guy who's giving everyone the opportunity to get better -- in a lot of the things people are afraid to even get into things like this -- for -- I'm not up to speed if I can't. If I can't do that ten pushups. The going to look at me funny true that's really true with a lot of athletic."

Play from 6:18[6:18]" It could be an and I I I like to say could be because I try to make sure that that doesn't happen one of the things in my school like Drew says we have very tightening it. And we all look out for each other if we have somebody that is behind I expect the other students studying me. I I Foster that in them to have compassion it's always having trouble with something you help them with. It's not something that they should feel bad about something that you're gonna help raise them up and that's that's kind of my philosophy and in Hawaii. We do say definitely not that's -- and we as you know help each other when it needs help. And help each other achieve goals."

Play from 6:54[6:54]" One of the really cool -- talking about the martial arts and this particular. Training and philosophy if you will that met your comb. Has and by the way we'll give out his website and information a story can find -- on one of the things that's really neat about it is it's not about violence it's never been about violence and people forget that. That really it's a philosophy of living. So so let's talk a little bit about that I want to get -- take on this to honor I'll let them yoga guy now also yoga big tussle so I'm -- and sometimes twice a week and I'm really into the the mindset as well as the physical but talk a little bit about what you tell your your beginning students or your mid range students as to what."

Play from 7:33[7:33]" This is sure I mean when we start out we basically. Gear all against invisible people okay so -- it it's not like you get in their new -- hit no other kids and and you'll learn how to hit that way you you learn the motion England in the moves but you're taught how to do it. Basically in the air and we take their philosophy and we say you use what you learn here only here under instruction or with your parents the karate is for defense only. But then as you gain rank and as you go further into the system he learned how to use all the stuff with control. And in the bottom line karate what it should teach more than anything else take -- the punches kicks and blocks. It should teach you self control it should teaching self discipline. It should teach you. How to react properly so that. The violence part is never a factor the that contact is never needed to be done it gives you that self confidence to know that. You can get on the situation without resorting to that. And that's what really karate should be the philosophy itself."

Play from 8:35[8:35]" you've been teaching for awhile and Drew you've been taking lessons for awhile and you does very well when you talk about self discipline where up. How does that enter into the equation are people more likely to take better care of their bodies. Respect other people understand space second and maybe both of you could comment on that trip through the student first."

Play from 8:54[8:54]" Well I mean you know from my perspective as a kid I it was karate was one of those things I. It'll always wanted to do boy never really got into it because of that this as a totality of and I had friends that went but it took me until I was you don't already thirty years old you know close in my thirties are actually doing it and enjoying it and the way it was presented to me in this and Matt and -- environment was no you do which you can. And you progress as you going and you show us what you have and it's all bow yeah it's really."

Play from 9:26[9:26]" All about the student. To the almost the best of our abilities and that's that's really what is now you have another thing that I wanted to have you talk about at -- your. That your wonderful institution called can show -- family Campo and that is. The good group we have two things the good grade rewards program sure again this is tying in with the schools and if anything you can be -- Inspiring to other teachers on this what how does that work and why why isn't work."

Play from 9:53[9:53]" I think the good grades reward program basically we always say this -- the parents if they behave for me at my karate school that's good for me. But what it should do is it should go home so that's good for you. And it's also should be good for school so what I do -- I when they -- something like karate I I'd say it will make them bring their report Qaeda and to -- And they show me the report 88 let me tell you don't -- they love the karate enough that they don't want me to see something bad. And so I look over the grades and if they have all these on the report -- I give them what we call karate dollars which is just. Printed money that they can use my school to Whitewater's patches had bands whatever they. Whatever they see that we sell eat and it's a good way to teach them work ethic so we'll we'll go beyond happening to simply degree incentive if it's easing bees are given three if they come in with a bad report I give one. For having the courage to show me something back but then I set goals for. And I say look if you ever see in -- If you bring the -- would be I'm going to give you five because one thing that I love even better than good grades is improving something that needed to be improved. So I mean that that is the basic philosophy behind the good -- report program it's to bring the discipline of the karate make them realize that it applies everywhere this is not just for me."

Play from 11:10[11:10]" With -- metric home and it's can only spell this out -- for folks can show. -- family dot com and it's KEN of course can show KEN SHO and then -- is actually are wide use correct so it's important that we can do that two can show rue family dot com. Located in Oxford and you get students coming in from all over."

Play from 11:31[11:31]" So yeah we do we do but we also have a lot of locations if you do go to my website and I may -- I am not need you there's one NC car my instructor actually teaches -- he can't but there's there's a link on the bottom that says other locations. They we all share that philosophy you know the love for teaching it's. It's very common drug control have you heard back from school administrators and school teachers as to how. Persisted mean that to kids who happen to be in karate teacher. After school holiday doing teachers it and I -- I gotta say actually had as its funny asset because actually about three days ago one of the kids of course our schools are already back. When the kids went back to school. And I teacher had called me and said hey this is a young men came back and he was a little bit of a problem not a bad way but just trying to. You know not focused. And in the teacher asked him what you've been up to -- even doing so it's taking karate and blah blah. And he actually she talked to the grandmother as -- she talked the boy and she actually called and said what do differences made. And that that's a true story in the people involved know who they are."

Play from 12:35[12:35]" Oh yeah and believe me. You don't have you don't have to have valid data is his dad is his body that they got him discuss this just came to my attention a couple of days ago by the way the number -- years 6172541030. In the second hour of this program as we get ready for school to start everywhere. We'll be talking further with educators and experts and people who -- But these guys met your -- ahead and structure they had instructor. At the attention roof -- that this -- an expert and he's one of his students. Truth area are here talking about. How anything like this can be so positive and and work for people and so many other ways beyond beyond -- but let's not negate the fact that. It gets you in shape -- Drew your your -- using union thirty and 3031. Seem to be in pretty good shape my friend it it is helps if it's definitely don't deal worked out of -- okay you go to your your classes and stuff but. Is there homework for a guy like you."

Play from 13:29[13:29]" basically it -- my homework is remembering all the new forms and being. You know every -- get something new and it's just trying to remember and apply it. And just working on your own to make -- better. You know it's it's all a matter of controlling your own body. And trying to do that -- my home market didn't really another work out other than class I don't think."

Play from 13:51[13:51]" Be able survive it into its -- Grilling and kind of work out absolutely emit somewhere absolutely when one of the things kids and adults both you mentioned that the physical -- just I mean it's it's a big topic you know that childhood obesity and and trying to get kids to be active get him off the computers. Karate is one of those things where that's up and actually play on the computer so they get to actually live it's so it's a very easy draw for kids to get them to come out. To make them more physically fit -- it it's a very important thing the adults as well I."

Play from 14:22[14:22]" Also along with and and keep going back to these rather. Unique and interesting programs you device with your wife. And again notices that the -- say Matt and his wife is named Shannon correct. One of them in Alston called student Richmond where you you. You make sure that you give diesel karate dollars would not just for good grades are true but you're getting these kids to gloat and do little good eater too. Yeah explain how that work."

Play from 14:46[14:46]" He had just an enrichment program basically I -- I have community based activities. Giving an example one of the things we did around christmas time was. And make something make a gift. And it can be anything you can make out -- clothes pin like Santa Claus. And then we're going to bring it to an elderly home. Sorry my causing -- and -- and not let them presented to these people in these homes and and just have that. That person appreciate a present something that they made and they physically bring there. So it's to make them bring these principles life into the world and make a difference in the community really make sure that they make that if."

Play from 15:25[15:25]" phone call in a moment 6172541031. Of our news men here. Kendall Buell is when he's not doing -- news. Is actually doing. What you do he's going to sojo Poland and the north shore nice nice man. Would mess from the neither -- recognizing -- good friends and and I know that that -- so many people in your line of work. Are so thoroughly trained by other masters actually. It's not just you woke up one day decided article about the school I'll take a few lessons just Tony very quickly before we go to John phone. Where you're coming from yeah."

Play from 16:03[16:03]" I mean for me. My my I I started actually in 84 flag waving a character karate kid about -- in the next day I -- for karate classes that's that's actually deliver a lot of delta and it really did -- Europe or movement as far as karate as. As -- I think for children. But yeah as I've progressed at throughout the train I've worked -- so so different people in my instructing our grandmaster. -- Chile he is my instructor he took this DJ IT class we say how can you teach if you no longer learned. There's a point where eight yet everybody so when you've done learning -- never done when he -- living. I'm so it it just. It's about making sure that you continued training of work I my my trainers like -- on an 84. And I continue to understand I think coaching probably reverend. -- his lines anyway."

Play from 16:54[16:54]" Let's hope you go unfurl a lot of lot of decades doing it when they go to John -- cell phone one John welcome to WBZ we're talking a bit about. Martial arts training and all the good that it can do hi there John."

Play from 17:06[17:06]" Yes good evening -- you excellent. Like this one and I heard radio cellular call it Lama fellow cancer -- and also was actually in the know preschool. -- I am in my a early forties. And I -- about it because my eight year old son at the time wanted to start. And now we visited those go bounds. We like says they've liked the rules students that -- fictional -- about it. And nom. That they are -- siding. And now all my son and myself. Just love it."

Play from 17:44[17:44]" You know John you bring up a very good point and actually was going to bring up would you and and that is one as an adult taking -- in as a parent actually. We say. If if I have apparent in their -- homicides if you haven't thought about it right before. -- most people have thought about it one point. I say while way to think of it needs terms. How many things in this life now as as we get older can you say you're gonna go back and and learn from scratch and -- I don't from a police we you know nothing. And start to look almost like a child again it's it's quite a magical thing I always say with with the parents is that me. But it is an -- I see this guy knows were talking. But then ticket into something else and and if you have a child and and then you're taking you'll learn together -- how many times can you say a six year old and a 35 year old have something in common. I mean that you're learning at the same time and really -- create a blind in -- connection that so. If you think I'm not saying correctional. You know obviously yogurt is is another thing all children do do."

Play from 18:48[18:48]" Yes exactly it's it's amazing and it -- on the guy -- fifty year old guy just started doing it and I love and I'm hooked on and I can't wait to go back everytime he hasn't had the keys and an end in the decent thing is it John and and Matt and Andrew we call -- a practice at your practice which means you're always working to get better -- and get more out of it he John see you up to two sons doing it. It -- though all that's to rip awesome and what level are you are you at a certain level yet."

Play from 19:16[19:16]" I am a first degree black with this go to. Our figures soon that it might my twelve year old that disorder do is go to. And my eight year old is a first degree brown that's great loss -- very cool well and we just we love it the great work so and it really for anyone who really wants fixed it. It is something that they can be proud of them now. Because you get everything you put into it yourselves. And every respect its -- children is from normal."

Play from 19:52[19:52]" That's that's so true and I've noted that with other friends and and certainly -- that was with Matt and Andrew here the respect for. They are to the respect for the practice and respect for -- absolutely great John thank you so much and continued success my friend John thank you. All right let it sit there but sets a thing about that it's amazing John was drive right. To the -- hearing how how much does impact you know when you hear something about karate is just perk up and I'm going to call and going to. You know they'll get let me ask both you guys a question that that sort of related to this -- which we were now seeing on on television the ultimate fighting championship kind of thing. And I know that's very very popular obviously and it's very hot with the I'd say guys study 1618. To forty. Has that kind of thing have you heard from some of the little kids yet. All I really want to be like that guy on TV has that at all infiltrated into the karate workshops or is that still a separate issue."

Play from 21:01[21:01]" Yeah -- you know that's that's for the younger guys know and ending. And that's a good thing to me I I think that it's I have no problem with them and they have no problem with the USC's at all everybody has the right -- do with Dave will. On the especially with a growing sport like that that's a great thing I think for I think it'll even say there's a certain. And maturity that needs to be here before you can go at that level and hopefully you know parents are you know may be. Not exposing them still fully to that because not saying that its violent or it's not okay it's a sport boxing wrestling all of it you know date date date are hitting it's the way it is. But you know to make sure that they. Kind of growth forests and and know that it's a sport and not have a carry on to something else. I watch it -- I have no -- no problem with that too I teach children know to have adults all. I I do have adults say that there interest we have something called hybrid fighting. That's actually she Jason to -- who's a member of our system he fought USC one into. Help -- couple buddies in mind their own catcher ruined in Walpole. Divides a way to kind of bridged that gap so that this a little less about. They called the ground and pound when he just kind of -- and and punch just with a few more rules it's a very exciting and a new up and coming sport that's going to hit sport karate Ningxia. -- what it's gonna it's gonna kind of bridge that -- like I said take a little bit of that. That may be over the top kind of like okay for the eighteen to 29 year old guy but maybe not today you know ten year old kid or the 35 year old accountant."

Play from 22:41[22:41]" journalism student you started seven years ago see you're against it twenties. And I would imagine. Barring and hopefully it never happens any kind danger to you can just do this wouldn't of forever and ever --"

Play from 22:52[22:52]" So I don't I that's I hope it's that way you know I I found something that I really really enjoyed and you know that the situation and amend allied and I have a three year old daughter home. That I'm hoping when she's ready for rich I can pass something out her."

Play from 23:06[23:06]" No met told me and it's no secret because there's a picture of him and his lovely family you get kids to three and four years old correct and your son your youngest is he he's autistic yes he's he has autism the he's my little hero like call Michael mini me you if you have a CSO -- not any even though we just. A like in the picture we actually we are match insurance 'cause he recognizes the the patterns and she's she's where one. You know we do a lot of work and that and that means well with the special education. We obviously have a a horse in the race I like to say. Of autism so we really do have a a program set up specifically for them what kind of do it seriously Tony looked at before -- oh absolutely there are parents so they're listening right now who are thinking well I'd -- it's the -- this kind of thing. If -- sounds terrific but it might my child has that at some kind of learning disability or emotional problem or so for your your equipped to handle all perhaps."

Play from 24:05[24:05]" Lou we one of the things being personally involved. I got to see my my son is partially verbal but but he is very limited so we do a lot of sign language we policies the -- system. Which allowed me to use those two systems anybody with eight speech delay -- sort of talking about with the pecks in the silent which. But we have devised a way to help them learn -- through the system. While we still do vocal commands so that try to get them to speak. We use these to make sure that they can get that routine where these -- structured setup where we have. Discreet trials which means a one on one with me in them and we invite any ABA or early intervention or any other person helping with this child to come into class and help them kind of physically go through it. But we we do one on one -- and we bring it into the into the class a group class with all. Both typical and special education so that they have a positive role model is it typical developing child to fall but also other especially as well as a a shadow -- personal person standing with them to make sure that they. Can continue to learn. It's it's a very personal thing for me it."

Play from 25:17[25:17]" really to slow the what I discovered and I I've only been on the -- free of martial arts but I I know talking with guys like -- and meeting such great people. In the field is it's an empowering kind of thing in that it definitely is it gives you a sense not not that your big tough guy but it gives you sense that. That you have control of for a lot of kids and that's what it tonight's program is so court before school -- for they're nervous there they're anxious they're. It whether it be peer pressure bullying it's accuse them right sort of all launching bad to be themselves and have some."

Play from 25:49[25:49]" Pride in what they do it absolutely does one of them I always say it's the buzzwords in a self confidence self discipline but you know what that's the truth of martial arts was always designed to do these things for you just through the regular training. But if you think about blowing everybody knows that bullies pick on people that. Don't look like they're going to stand up for themselves but by training in the -- would accuse Jews of self confidence a -- carrying yourself that does not make you up here. To be somebody they wanna pickle if they think that you stand up they won't pick on you they'll pick on somebody else that they think will not defend themselves. It has more to do with how you carry yourself. That it does what you know they may never know that I -- I mean probably when I walked and you leukemia perhaps I would know he took -- But I carry myself in a way. They you can see on self confident in what I who I am in and what I'm capable of so maybe if you were looking not that you -- to pick on me maybe you wouldn't because you'd notice that I am very self confident and self assured."

Play from 26:48[26:48]" And it's not just the physical to a minute -- Indian Indian business it can be. In at a job interview yeah just having that sense of self confidence for yeah for our adults I I do say you know if if you have that self confidence going in May be won't be nervous to tell the boss your idea. Maybe you won't be nervous. -- Chet asked for a race you know where you know you might feel like. -- reserve to try to do those things this -- feel important helps you feel self confidence to do things they didn't know you're able to --"

Play from 27:18[27:18]" I'd learned a lot of vote can show rule and the philosophy with you guys here and of course. People can find these places around the bay state yours though is located in. A beautiful town the only town I know of that begins with the EU in the second letter is next helping -- streets -- beautiful John Blackstone valley right and let me let me have you give us your website spell it against please sure."

Play from 27:43[27:43]" It's not KE ENSH. Oh. RYU. Family dot com all one word -- truth and we dot com and that phone number is 58278. 8348. And yeah we. We say you visit the website you really get a good sense of who we only get to hear us and I'd say you know. You get to hear who we -- get to read up on us we we try to make sure that you you know who we Aaron and no we stand for an."

Play from 28:10[28:10]" Drew is here as a as a student. Almost like I don't I'm guessing your. Not that far away in age from the sky he does a look at them until -- fifteen -- utley ABC aquarius but I can see just the earlier. You know you're here proudly to -- to drive them in and then I'll absolutely that there really made a difference in your life absolutely every what do you do for a living room."

Play from 28:31[28:31]" I -- me engineering support specialists and guess so you have did you candidates that I sit behind a computer all -- so this is a great way to get better exercise you don't get when you run it exactly listen guys thank you very much. There are a lot of things that people find out about again we talked about the earlier some of these really innovative programs. Giving kids incentives getting them involved in community getting them to think about their grades well good go on nicely done thank you very much Harlem's and that's why you you're -- that's -- His name is met Jericho and JC ONE head instructor attention roof and a mechanical and experts can show roof family and Bruce Feld are. Why you remember that cancer -- family dot com. And in the next hour we'll continue to talk about. Education in various ways in how to get our kids motivated as school starts don't thank you very very much thank you and we'll see sealed the -- okay."
