Play from 0:00[0:00]" This is the sort of commentary I usually saved for closer to July 4 but the cited Big Papi David Ortiz taking the oath of citizenship yesterday that the Kennedy library. Evokes a number of emotions and questions starting with one we can afford to start thinking about right now. What does it mean to be an American citizen. To the Dominican born Ortiz has become one of the country's most popular sports stars it means this is the place he's chosen. To raise his family along with his American born wife. It's a great country he said yesterday I'm proud to be a part of it. For Big Papi. Being a part of this country has meant far more than simply enjoying its freedoms and luxuries and the rewards of being a Major League Baseball -- He has a fixture at local charity events has raised thousands of dollars for local causes and has established the David Ortiz children's fund. To help kids in need and by all accounts he is a model citizen in his personal life a devoted family man and never the source of the sketchy headlines. According to the globe John Shattuck CEO of the Kennedy library foundation. Yesterday cited the importance of Ortiz as a public figure not just for what he does but for who years and that's a laudable goal for any citizen. Our country isn't just a gigantic -- of statistics and demographics has some politicians sometimes try to pretend. It's the joint ongoing project of millions of citizens who for the most part. Really do care about building a law abiding morally healthy society of opportunity and fairness. You can make money and enjoy fame by hitting home runs. But the enduring value of citizen Ortiz lies in who he has and what he does the rest of the time. In the toxic debate over -- immigration reform. The image of immigrant has the singular positive force in shaping this country has at times been obscured. But even the most humble immigrant who brings big poppies personal qualities to the table in the news or ought to be a welcome addition. Because isn't that who made us great in the first place"

[0:13]..." you destroy yourself and quote. Did you get it. It was Richard Nixon in his farewell address to the White House staff on the day he left Washington after resigning in disgrace for obstructing justice during the Watergate affair. I have heard the quote or thought about it in a long time until last night when I attended an excellent production of frost Nixon at the colonial theatre. The play tells the story of the extensive TV interviews British talk show host David Frost conducted with former President Nixon. Which climaxed with -- an apology from knicks and for the crimes that led to his impeachment. Frost and his fellow journalists in the place celebrate that moment as the crowning achievement the forcing of a moment of truth and contrition that never would have occurred without them. But that's wrong. Nixon's ultimate moment of humiliation and admission of wrong doing. Came on that last day in the White House when he uttered that quote and that gave that last pathetic waved as he boarded the chopper. And his comment about the self destructiveness of political hatred remains appallingly relevant. Perhaps inspired by the successful pursuit of Nixon an entire culture political destruction as the ball totally self righteous and profoundly corrosive. It was evident in the persecution of Bill Clinton in a pushed arrangements syndrome that was evident well before the invasion of Iraq. And could already see the sporting a self serving hatred of Obama a man totally undeserving of such poison. If you see frost Nixon you should come away convinced of Nixon's guilt absolutely. But sympathetic to his humanity if you don't. You may be on the path toward self destruction that Nixon warned us about. "...
