Play from 0:01[0:01]" Good morning this is guns and Charles Rangel of New York and the chairman of the house Ways and Means Committee. And right now I guess all the eyes of the country looking at this current economic downturn. And really see what it means the hard working people and the ability to make it needs. The president and the leadership of the congress has come together in a bipartisan way and put together an economic stimulus package. The premise of this packages put the money in the hands of people. Who and such dire economic straits that they have no choice except to spend the money back into the economy. In other words the president is not doing this look compassionate reasons but he's talking in the families who -- struggling to put a roof over their heads food on the table sending kids back to school. And they want them to get it rebates because they are forced to spend the money to survive. This is not a compassionate act is really done in noted despite our businesses they want businesses to be able to serve the -- goods and his services to people. Who right now even though many and work every day just can't afford to buy. So as we move forward to leave behind and to make more perfect this package. I think we ought to really ask the president what that is involved this in the first place. In the 1990s he had periods such. Wrong economic growth. But in recent kids. We have rising gas prices weakness in the housing and credit markets and dramatic increases in the cost of health care and education. Millions of families -- left out because of this stagnant wages. The erosion of they -- benefits they're feeling insecure and they should feel insecure as we find out that. More than five million people. Have slipped into poverty since the year 2000 and yet to and is very very same time period. The incomes of the wealthiest nation have grown to new heights. In fact the issue of pretax income going to the top 1% of households is that the highest level since 1929. We know what happened in 1929 we don't want to go back the F. But there's something wrong with the picture if we find so many people go into poverty poverty is deadly. It's expensive it's a threat to our nation and has been ignored for too long. Now while those packages may be good -- is that it seems to me after."

Play from 2:25[2:25]" The recovery and we will recover that we have to really take a look and see what causes and get into the situation and how we can get out one thing for certain. And we had a more equitable tax system and equitable tax code. That treated the people in the middle class with some of the dignity and preferential treatment that we give to those people and -- they would not have to be targeted. Another thing is that we -- to -- say that we have unemployment compensation. Bob -- time -- had a recession reveals unemployment compensation to ease the pain of the people that are suffering here. Another thing that we should really take a look at. Is what are we going to do to provide a public safety net. That is the makes say that we don't have universal Kia that we do an education kids and jobs opportunities and that we do make satan. That old folks are being taken Kia. We look forward to working with the president in a bipartisan way we haven't enjoyed this in the past been doing the last few months of this administration. It gives us an opportunity to work together. To avoid people having to say. I work every day. I want my dignity I want my pride and I don't want to have the government to give me a rebate. So Americans have always been a driving force of change in the world we have done this since the beginning as a nation. Now it's time for all of us the ban together Republicans and Democrats. Do work with this president and ask him to help us to rekindle a dream that is paid for so many of my brother's insistence. This is congressman Charles Rangel thank you so much for listening"
