[0:00]" It's about a turning into hair and his wife news and struggling. With cancer and there's an accident with his train one -- unity striving and involves a young -- way and it's it's about how these three kind of main characters come together and and confronts with some issues in their life and also. Also kind of end up becoming kind of a strange kind of family in a weird way under somewhat tragic circumstances."
[0:34]" And Kevin bacon and and Marcia gay Harden starring in this found amusing newcomers well -- part of Davies played -- AM miles Kaiser music yen and I Jesus Reyes was first found and and he did a wonderful job and I think he's going to be you know I really great actor in the -- make the transition. The child into adult. He started out in this film as a producer of and Lamar in bonds he became the story in the project. And -- yet know the characters you want it to you decide you wanted to direct. What changed your mind you know I had been."
[1:10]" I had the scripts for a couple of years and am. I just really after a while after sitting with his with the script and working out with the writer and shopping around and trying to find financing and -- felt that. I really started did you know feel these characters and a vision for a minute I was really inspire did to tell their story and I thought it was unique and special and and then of course the series dreaming that Thelma and seeing in dollar time in. So it just it this became very infused in me and I felt that I had -- To get down on films."
[1:47]" With tough getting people to accept him as a director --"
[1:51]" Have any time in years here first time director I think you know people are always wary of -- whether or not you can -- and but you know fortunately I surrounded myself with some great people and some. In the great great crew in obviously great Kasten and I think I think -- the powers that be doing a little bit more you know. Probably it felt a little you know better about maybe giving me an opportunity after realizing that I concern myself with creepy."
[2:24]" Well did you finally visit the set it on to pick up any tips from him"
[2:28]" no he didn't as the sets you know he he's always been very supportive and helpful that that very much peripheral level and and you know I think he. Really wanted me to feel like I I was can and you know be doing this homeland and and not you know I mean obviously there's always been kind of overshadowing it and then. And I'm sure he's aware of that so he was very you know very sweet and very kind of concern and not in and it. Nobody thought that you know he was kind of you know helping -- fearing their overshadowing the processor or the experience for me it's. And as far as tips now more fatherly tense moments -- acting you know get a lot of sleep take your vitamins and -- a cold and I haven't gotten a lot of sleep -- him running around promoting the film and I was so lucky I didn't get I didn't get sick -- following -- shooting in it was you know. Peak winter and theater actually had cold weather in Los Angeles -- has dance that's a long. Yes I'm you know we had that we started -- in any start at 6 in the morning and went you know seminary ninths have. Yet they were long but you know I think sometimes when you're so focused you don't even have time to. To get were hasn't happened she didn't think about it and I kind of bank and I use a symbol that you know we have we have the train the train symbol in my attorneys in Germany. I was kind of like a freight train the not --"
[3:58]" Not just for. Well the final product says it pianists in its -- doing it now sound -- a little and -- it was one of voluntary fitting to the story your brother Kyle Milan in the original music definitely -- with him. Well I'm."
[4:15]" You are all family all work together quite a bit -- we need to employ each other's. My dad's worked with my brother he's sport and several of his scores before and and he in my dad's worked with with some of -- kids and and different act generals. It was great you know I'm in love I love working with my family sometimes in the little bit of potentially difficult thing to do working with your family because. You have a lot of you know. Not says it was the work that unique items and baggage in things that come along with that that we actually home relief you know -- along wonderfully in and work well again sounds. You know it's come very naturally to channel that supports yeah real lane and you know and fortunately they are really supportive and the Unionists and we know -- Different dynamics of family members that would hand. We all respect each other and you know and everyone's Catherine talents and so now it's it's great -- Portland."
[5:15]" How did you come to choose Kevin bacon and Marcia gay Harden in these girls well both of them had read the scraps they kind of came across the script and you know was out to Americans and monks the agencies and in Hollywood and and I think Kevin's wife cure had actually had raddatz. And given it to him in -- nation we read in Scranton. So -- kind of both of them found it. And kind of flat let it be known to me through there their representation that they. Really responded to characters into the scrapped and I was just lucky enough -- You know two kept and to trust needed direct them for the first time and for means. And they -- and -- that they had a great chemistry again they did stay dead and I think you know as a director you always. He worried because you don't know you're taking and they they worked on Mystic River together obviously and they came and they recommended my dad that. They never had scenes together so I he didn't know whether or not in -- viewers wonder -- of these people DC married couples or to get an analyst at Kent -- ever know -- today in Afghanistan and Resnick knew exactly and so any hours concern I think you know probably to recognize concern that there. Their lead actors there are going to -- be able to. Commenced an audience that relationship that they pick in the creature. I think that's just you know testament and the fact that most of professional -- many challenges that you didn't expect actually you know there wasn't so many I mean I really kind of felt. Obviously I was nervous when we started the first day but you know I think has by the third hour -- you know we were shooting in the first and I. And -- an Apple -- hikes and watching these two actors and I think things have been doing this now lives. It kind of you know -- of course -- certain challenges and things that happened but you know I really. Felt like I was comfortable in that role and kind of I don't know maybe it maybe it's in the -- and 90 immense suffering natural means when you started to think companies yeah I hadn't yet worked with my data little bit as a kid -- I -- been you know and been working. Really consistently since my mid to warnings about ten years Sabena said it was probably pretty comfortable -- and then growing up. He knows he can't that we least penalized tendons in my dad he worked Anthony's and in the late 70s and 80s and he was cranked them -- I hope my brother and I spent a lot of time visiting him on the stats and yet it did it felt. Very natural Libyan environments and and it's kind of like being with."
[8:01]" And this story is pretty heavy emotionally how are you able to make it uplifting -- do you feel positive. -- how well it is going to come out of --"
[8:09]" Yeah I have I am I'm glad he says that I hope I hope that you do I mean I didn't want it to be just this little kind of happy ending kind of cliche Hollywood. You know everything just wraps up and it's a nice neat little package that. I did wanted to be hopeful and someone uplifting because it is a very heavy story deals with a lot of hard subjects and but that's what life is about we've all doubtless. Loss and grief and tragedy and everyone's had their own struggles alliance now but I did you know one and kind of convey that feeling and without totally giving it away it just was something that was very careful and attentive to. To try and mean and be aware of and I didn't want it to be you know with to complete downer we didn't feel you know. And it -- it's a lot its alliances it's a lot to handle and now earn four amendments you know."
[9:02]" And real tier -- emotion and it really is. How did you find miles -- I thought he was a jam in the role of the young boy Davie"
[9:12]" which found him in a Kaman what they're casting director and and read on tape I am merely -- a lot of kids. And pretty much from the moment -- sized companion was ten. He just had. He conveyed as certain. In depth and soul for and you know young when he -- 12 and in the town you insist entertainment. Yeah I just I knew I just knew it was him I you know adult. Trouble convincing everyone else because seen as is his first major found in his pistons and television and certain things but. He never analysis hasn't done anything this is having on its idea that this can so I just -- It is one of those things I think sometimes and you you do a film unions. You use -- to meet lot of different people and you know -- by several different people anything could be right in the wrong with. And you missed that exit from the alma and did he ask serial -- faces and an angel racist. He did so well and then he really exceeded my expectations -- he did."
[10:17]" Really well and he looking actually looks like the actors that played his mother and media news. Well I gather as well that's I was."
[10:24]" into me and me night and we'd cast miles first because obviously he had really. Pivotal role but so I had worked with Bonnie root who played his mother in film for ninth and sisters in. I knew that you know she was very talented and anguish and the reluctance masters who want to commend read into the great job and it was important for me because I think you see movies and you know these people have these kids Munich kind of look anything like they can company's gonna. As important I mean it you know not only person was obviously and good actress and could handle that role but that they looked enough like queen could. Believe -- and -- my absence totally believable --"
[11:05]" Did he need much coach Tim you know I didn't eat a lot of."
[11:08]" We in the first time we dealt with an emotional scene you know we talked about it and I asked him and I could help them -- you know like we did a lot of completed some imagination things you know worked with imagination and -- you have to -- McCain hasn't been through all this kind of experience you can use your imagination and it's one great thing network with kids that. They haven't kind of been completely. You know kind of conform -- Internet. You know in -- still use this of this great imagination and and they still absorbing yeah they're still you know there's still kind of very open minded it's now but he did needs is to a great job and not even Sharon and it never even asked -- hasn't figured that. Maybe had something that went on in his life and he didn't want to talk about -- He found a lot of things to pull from in and I mean he tests all of that was authentic known had to put tears and -- is there. Now enacted -- I didn't have to do a lot and that just goes to show PRD has a great talent because. You know he managed it to you know find all those emotions on."
[12:12]" Do you think directing is more -- average of -- to Avalon now do you think you still -- I think -- an event -- body of work you've done yeah I'm an easy that I might and I were condenser M and patterns this commitment. I'm on midnight in the garden of good and evil -- yeah NATO's."
[12:29]" Cream in the news I'm I'd like -- continued directing and an obvious it's far more satisfying. You know you really get to you know work from its inception in and all the way it's it -- your final product and have you know you know really get to pour everything into it. You know acting is is it can be great and and very satisfying thing. You know at the end of the day issue happening to use thing and then somebody else. With Afghanistan but it all together and you know can manipulated in the editing room and you never know which are -- and the cats have. Yeah I do I loved I loved directing and loved the experience and like to do it again it certainly don't want to. Discount ever acting again -- what's next for you at this point and then a few things -- kind of working as far as possibly directing it. Nothing for sure because I really wanted to wait until I found the right story that inspired me one into town because it took me awhile to get to this story. And it's importance mean from now on. That I'm really proud of everything I do I haven't always done things as inactive I was necessarily. Proud -- and certain things -- did because you know you needed to pay your mortgage you in Manhattan life and all these things in. Wanted to make a living in and I just at this point from here on and I really mean and commitments myself and his community projects that reliever. Close to my heart and really resonated with -- hands I've gotten things on the burner nothing spoiling -- at the time we -- that the Yankees settlements"
