     News that a convicted child killer has moved into the city prompted the mayor to create a committee to study tightening restrictions on where sex offenders can live.   Douglas Simmons lived briefly in Derry in January, but moved backto Connecticut after the community rallied against him. Last week, he moved to Manchester and registered as a child offender.

     A landmark bill designed to manage everything from wind farms to whale watching in the ocean waters off Massachusetts is making its way through the Statehouse.  Environmental activists are calling the legislation a first-in-the-nation attempt by a state to create a management plan for ocean waters.

    A fire broke out at the scene of a freight train derailment which caused a chemical spill in Lawrence.  Firefighters said it was not immediately clear what caused barrels containing the recovered sodium chlorate to catch fire Saturday night.
       The chemical is commonly used in the manufacture of paper pulp and as a herbicide.

     Plymouth voters are overwhelmingly backing a plan to build a movie studio in this historic town.  Eighty-eight percent of voters backed the plan in a nonbinding ballot vote Saturday, the Patriot Ledger reported.  The vote comes as talk of the construction of a permanent movie studio in Massachusetts heats up.

    Children in an Iraqi hospital soon will be hugging stuffed animals from New Hampshire.  Joanna Fekay is organizing an effort to send the toys to Iraq in remembrance of her boyfriend, D.J. Stelmat, an Army medic who died in Iraq in March.  The stuffed animals include a tag with Stelmat's photo and will be sent to a hospital he frequently visited.

    Boston police say they've fixed a software glitch that sent officers to the wrong neighborhood to investigate a homicide.  In March, a caller to 911 reported the death of Melissa Santiago in Dorchester and gave a Washington Street address.  But police went to the Washington Street address in Downtown Crossing before arriving at the correct address 14 after the call. They were still able to make an arrest in the case.
  • Sat, 10 MayFirefighter memorial dedicated in Brockton
     The city of Brockton has dedicated a memorial to 13 firefighters killed in a theater fire, 67 years after the tragedy.  Officials on Saturday unveiled a 10 foot bronze statue of a fire fighter kneeling in prayer, with a fire helmet with the number 13 at his feet.
     The men were killed in a March 10, 1941, blaze at the Strand Theatre, located 100 feet from the City Hall amphitheatre where the memorial now stands.
